Scholarship Recipients: Class of 2013

Lancy: is from the countryside of Sichuan province. Her poor family includes her mother, brother, sister in law, and nephew. Her father died when she was 15. Her mother is in poor health and has no skills for employment. Her brother looks after the family. Lancy enjoys listening music, reading books, climbing, badminton and Ping-Pong. She is the leader in her University.

Tiffany: Chinese name ZhouYing, is very diligent in her studies with a goal of becoming an excellent teacher. There are eight people in her family: grandparents, parents, elder brother, sister-in-law, and niece. Her older brother and sister do not have stable jobs. As farmers, they have to work day and night to make ends meet. Tiffany enjoys outdoor recreation; badminton, running and climbing mountains while enjoying beautiful sceneries. She seeks a balance between her studies and "life". Her university life is "colorful".

Betty: Is active in her classes and is frequent contestant of speech contests. She participated in a Snow White performance. She has many hobbies; Chinese chess, basketball, singing and dancing and class debate contests. At the end of her freshman year, she was second in her class. She feels she is fortunate because she has two sisters and one little brother. Her mother's health is not good in recent years, so as farmers, she is too weak to do any manual work and always in hospital.

Shine: is outgoing, optimistic and easy-going person. He gets along well with his classmates and teachers. He is ranked fifth in his class. Shine is an only child in a family where his father has lung disease prohibiting him from working. With the illness his mother borrowed 20,000 RMB ($USD3,00) from relations and friends. With such a debt, university study was not an option.
